Abstract
Research studies on weight reduction for the automotive industry have been focused on composite materials in recent
years. Due to the legal restrictions on CO2 emissions, thermoplastic matrix composites are now being used especially in
the automotive industry to reduce weight with specific strength, formability, lightness, and recycling capabilities and to
meet the required mechanical features [1]. Self-reinforced thermoplastic composites constitute a particular area of
composite materials thanks to their 100% recyclability and high resistance against impact conditions [2]. In this paper,
tensile and shear tests were conducted for self-reinforced polypropylene based thermoplastic composite plates produced
by a lamination method. Self-reinforced laminates consisted of 6, 9 and 12 plies of PP fabrics. Then, the composite plates
were drilled according to the standard to determine the open hole-effect [3].
Specimens were prepared following ASTM D5766 and ASTM D5379 standard by using water jet cutting method for
open hole experiments and shear strength tests respectively. Open hole, shear, and tensile tests were performed on Zwick
universal tension-compression test machine. Open hole specimen sizes were 200 mm x 50 mm with 8 mm hole diameter
and Iepescu shear strength test specimens were 76 mm x 19 mm dimension. The thickness were varied according to ply
number (1.7 mm for 12 ply laminate, 1.27 mm for 9 plies laminate and 0.85 mm for 6 ply laminate). The sample of the
prepared specimen geometries were presented in Figure 1 and Figure 2a.
